You should be able to print directly to the printer without causing it too
many headaches.  It will look after its own queueing.  If the Linux box
happens to be RedHat, use the GUI-driven printtool program as root.  Set the
printer up as if it were locally connected, but in the "Remote Host" section
put the hostname or IP number of the printer and under "Remote Queue" use
"raw" (without quotes).  If the printer server is a multi-port, then you may
have to use queue names raw1 or raw2 ...  

I seem to recall that the HP JetDirect documentation has reasonable
explanation of the queue names to use.
