What error do you get if you type "pppd" from a terminal?
What does /var/log/ppp.log say?
(If that doesn't exist, try /var/log/messages or /var/log/syslog, not too
sure on Redhat logfiles)

If it's dialing pppd has already started.
Again, please let us know what the logfiles say.

I find that very odd.
Then again...
What IRQ is your ethernet card on?
If it's on IRQ3 or IRQ4 is is probably conflicting with your serial port.

Maybe he's getting confused with the fact that with the newer (2.2) linux
kernels you don't need to add a route when you configure an interface,
because it works it out automatically, whereas with the old kernels (2.0,
which I believe is what comes with RedHat 5.2) you do need to specify the
route.
None of that causes conflicts between ppp and ethernet though, and there
are a large number of people on this list who have both ethernet and ppp
working at the same time, under all versions of RedHat, Debian and other
Linux Distro's.
