Looking at /proc/meminfo in conjunction with the results of free on my 
system, the -/+ buffers/cache line from free seems to suggest that of the 
total memory available, x is currently allocated to buffers, y to cache (on 
your quoted system results: 87644 to buffers, 494968 to cache).
