Saying "thanks" is certainly nice but who are you thanking? If you want
to thank someone for their help then email *them* off-list -- there's no
need to thank the entire list for the advice of, at most, a handful of
people. I personally find it pretty irritating when someone replies to
a helpful response with a one line "Thanks!" meanwhile quoting most of
the previous message. However, if there is cause to follow up the issue
you originally questioned with the outcome including any useful
information you may have learned that hasn't yet been aired on the list
then it seems reasonable to include in this a short thank you note to
those who helped you out.
That's my point of view anyway.
