Please consider... switching RARP on for the PPP link so that the
gateway can get its own address through DHCP (if that is a problem; I
would expect PPP to hand out an address already), and masquerading the
other machines? If the "server" end of things needs to be able to
connect to your portable clients, consider tunnelling between your
gateway and the "server" with private addresses for the clients.
