It's quite possibly either a standard serial or PS2 mouse (check where
it plugs in). There are other weird varieties of mice but I don't even
think I've ever come across them (of course they do exist, I've just
never come across one).
If you can't get it working either as a Microsoft mouse or a PS2 mouse
then it might be worth trying the other options. Perhaps the simplest
way to do this is to use 'gpmconfig' which can also do an autodetection
thingy (although it doesn't always work). If you're still stuck, give
me a yell. :)

Actually, I was the one who tried to clean it and I'm not sure I've
fully recovered from the experience. I remember removing some seriously
engrained dirt that you *assured* me was actually part of the mouse...
