Various amount of time. Seems to occur mainly when I go to
close a window or log out of KDE.

In answer to Simon's message about overclocking. My machine is not 
overclocked and has 128MB RAM.

In boot sequence get message,
modprobe not an elf file

Could that lend a clue to the problem?

How long does your box run before lock up?

Sometimes a warm CPU/faulty CPU will react in this way.
