Congrats on working out a fix. My contribution may not now be
relevant to you, but my experiences are that if Windows98 gets half
a chance it grabs everything in sight and makes it FAT-32. I suspect that
NT4 with ntfs will do the same thing. I got around my problems with
Windows98 (FAT 32) in situ was to use Partition Magic to convert the
Windows partition to FAT 16 which does not seem to be do any harm other
than to take up a little more Hard Disk space. I think you do likewise with
the NT ntfs partition, and from that point on everything behaves itself.
You might have to do a backup of the Linux partition as a safety measure
whilst all this is going on as my version 3 Partition Magic is a bit rusty
about Linux. The latest version 5 P-Magic may very well handle it better.
