Well, something's seriously wrong.... :-)
No, well, not completely.... the vga16fb was successfully loaded and
shows up in the dmesg output:
vga16fb: initializing
vga16fb: mapped to 0xc00a0000
fbcon_setup: No support for fontwidth 8
fbcon_setup: type 4 (aux 0, depth 4) not supported
Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 80x30
fb0: VGA16 VGA frame buffer device
Detected PS/2 Mouse Port.

VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) readonly.
Freeing unused kernel memory: 56k freed
fbcon_setup: No support for fontwidth 8
fbcon_setup: type 4 (aux 0, depth 4) not supported
fbcon_setup: No support for fontwidth 8
fbcon_setup: type 4 (aux 0, depth 4) not supported
fbcon_setup: No support for fontwidth 8
[ same fbcon_setup error message several more times ]
I had to get this info by telnetting into the machine, as the display
went to shit (a technical term) almost immediately after the VGA ask
prompt.
However, I was able to run fbset from my telnet session:
yoda:~# fbset
mode "640x480-59"
# D: 25.176 MHz, H: 31.469 kHz, V: 59.489 Hz
geometry 640 480 640 480 4
timings 39721 48 16 39 8 96 2
rgba 6/0,6/0,6/0,0/0
endmode
... so at least that's something.
I'm not sure what to try next. :(
