Meeting Topic:
Silicon Valley 2000 it's culture and technology
Gene E. Trivett
Senior Lecturer
Dept of Electrical & Electronic Engineering
The University of Western Australia
California is home to one in eight Americans and has a gross state
product of a trillion dollars (Note: real dollars). At the heart of
this phenomenal enterprise is Silicon Valley (SV). It has a culture,
work ethic, and creative ability like no other in the world (some
say thank goodness). Often referred to as embedded on planet
California, this talk covers several cultural and technological
aspects of this SV juggernaught. Several key technologies that are
driving SV's growth as well as SV's failures are discussed. Time
will be provided for questions, answers, and debates.
After UCLA, Gene spent over 20 years in Silicon Valley. He worked 30
years at IBM doing a wide range of projects which included: Building
Nuclear weapons at Los Alamos, Automating control of electricity
power grids, putting the man on the moon project, developing
transaction based banking systems including the ATM, and building AI
products. His largest project was the working for the president of
IBM performing technical responsibility (to 15,000 people) for the
Enterprise System Complex , which remains the basis of IBM's product
line today; . He has four world wide patents including the ATM,
Networking switching, distributed data sharing; he has published and
lectured widely. After IBM he developed his own company (with the
assist of vulture capitalists) in Silicon Valley which successfully
built an early 64 bit SPARC server bought out by Hatachi. Lectured at
the University level for three years and now consults.
On a personal level, Gene is a triathlete (Ironman), Surf Club
bronze medallion holder, Mt. Bike and cross-country ski racer. He
permanently resides at the ski area in Lake Tahoe Nevada with his
wife Lynn. He is a permanent Aussie resident.
