You could download and install jabber which is an open source instant
messaging client and server.  Similar to ICQ/ AIM/ MSNM etc etc.
You can use jabber to talk via jabber.com to  a normal ICQ server.

On the whoile a good solution getting better.   Would require retraining 
your users though :(
