I'm just coming in completely mid conversation here, plus I know nothing
about cups itself so this is just a random thought...

If you telnet'ed into localhost on port 631 (assuming this uses TCP/IP and
not UNIX ports) and see if it says connection refused or not, then it just
might *possibly* be a misconfigured firewall. Unlikely though - purely
random thought. But if it did connect, (if only you could speak cups
protocol over TCP/IP, being multilingual is handy) then you know
something's going...

Does it have options to bind to various addresses? eg, binds to localhost
but not anything else?
