For swapping media type, Matt suggested
    ifconfig eth0 media 10aseT

Unfortunately the 3C509B is not supported for this, returning the error message
SIOCSIFMAP: Operation not supported.

I seem to recall reading the Ethernet HOWTO a while ago, were it said the 
3COM card drivers lacked a bit of ifconfig setup support.  So thanks, but 
I'll have to keep trying the NASA site unless someone has it locally.
