[plug] Updating Sendmail

Hi People,
I have a quick question.
When you upgrade sendmail, firstly you would stop sendmail correcT?
/etc/..... sendmail stop
then basically get the source of the latest version, un tar it and compile
it?
Or do I need to remove the older version sendmail?
Any help is greatly appreciated!
