I have the same problem, well used to... I have a PS/2 IntelliEye explorer
(btw, does anyone know how to get them working in usbmouse in linux and
support all 7 buttons?). Previously, everytime i switched vt's from text
to X it'd freeze in the top corner like a Mouse Systems mouse tends to do
when it thinks its in PC mouse mode.... that was running gnome from under
gdm. I've since changed to starting X from the command line and use startx
(god knows why) and i havent had the problem since. This doesnt exactly
answer your question, it might be a workaround, but if anyone else can
shed some light on the mystery I'd be thankful too :)

Bernard.
