They actually run pretty much *everything* on linux. Their servers (after
all, the only other realistic choice would be one of the BSD variants), dev
boxes and much of the interally used hardware with the obvious exception of
routers/switches. Typically, ISP support desks rarely know much about any
UNIX variant because Windows is generally simpler to set up, and *still*
causes customers to have problems. The options for mistakes with Linux are
much broader.

I use Linux as a gateway, occasionally have problems, and occasionally have
to call support with a specific question which always gets shunted to second
line support. The last one related to what was clearly a Telstra issue and,
to be fair, they did their best, and were far simpler to deal with the
Telstra themselves.
