[plug] Killing resident zombies and other undesirables

Hi, I am currently having some problems with staroffice. The following
shows related processes running. All attempts at kill -9, killall,
logging out, using kill as root, going back and forward to init 3 & 5
(had a display crash some days ago and this is the only way it would
startup X again!) I cannot restart staroffice whilst these processes
are hanging around. One proc shows as April 6th, but have had a couple
of normal shutdown/restarts for startoffice (including this morning) up
until this mornings display crash (kde 2.1 on Mandrake 7.2, normally
quite stable)

Also, top shows:
  9:24am up 23 days, 19:00, 2 users, load average: 11.10, 11.23, 9.89
138 processes: 133 sleeping, 2 running, 3 zombie, 0 stopped
CPU states: 1.3% user, 0.2% system, 0.2% nice, 2.0% idle
Mem: 188000K av, 185156K used, 2844K free, 0K shrd, 2120K

Swap: 240932K av, 20800K used, 220132K free 68920K

which may be related to doing init 3 & 5 (seemed to increment the load
average last time I did this. No process shows up as hogging things as
reflected in the cpu states line.

Any ideas?
