Well I was sure he did so I went back and checked the original message,
and the exact words are "(so I can verify claims)". Naive little me
took that as meaning he would try out the software - how on earth else
was he going to verify there was no loss of functionality with his
windows applications? (picks jaw off the ground)
So I guess my reading of his words was wrong but you'll excuse me if I
don't change my opinion of Saturday's column.

The one thing I will say in NM's defence is with the volume of other
articles he writes for the west, his tiny space-filler in the
classifieds is probably not at the top of his priorities. In fact I
would hazard a guess he's the only staff member at The West who's under
retirement age and has thus been stuck with the mantle of "technology
guy", so we can probably take the quality (or lack thereof) of the
articles as a sign of the Wests's commitment to technology rather than
the sum of Nick's abilities as a journalist.

In fact does anyone remember that little pull-out they use to have every
Tuesday back '96 or so that was all about computers, internet, product
reviews, etc? I remember floating a suggestion with the editor that I
write a quick tutorial on writing and publishing a web page and was told
the subject alone was way too complicated for their readership. Of
course that was back in the day when I thought all you needed was a
text-editor, didn't know you had to go to Uni and learn frontpage. ;-)
