May I, at this time, throw in a quick plug for ext3...

It is a journalling filesystem which is fully backward
compatible with ext2 (meaning that switching a
filesystem from one to the other, in either direction,
involves about 2 minutes of work and one reboot). It's
basically just ext2 + some journalling code in the
form of a kernel patch.

I haven't noticed any speed difference between it and
ext2, and it's certainly very reliable - I use it on
everything from desktops to production servers.

I believe it's included in kernel 2.4 by default (not
sure tho), or I usually patch 2.2.18 instead.

There are a bunch of URLs on different servers -
http://freshmeat.net/projects/ext3/ will give you the
Freshmeat listing.

Hope this helps

Andrew
