[plug] cd checking - use 'dd if=source of=output.iso' then md5 checksum against iso checksum?

Hi Plug,
I've been looking for a way to verify that a cd made from an iso is correct.

I bought the Mandrake 8.0 cds 1 and 2  and disk 2 is suspect. If I get the 
md5sum off the net I thought I could just do -

dd if=source of=output.iso

and then do an md5sum on that, but it doesn't seem to work on any of my cds 
at all, so I presume I'm barking up the wrong tree.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
