I get the impression from the rest of the page that the new version of
KMail comes with the new version of KDE, which means it's unlikely for the
new kmail to work with the old version of KDE, due to KDE applications'
heavy dependance on the KDE libraries, therefore downloading the binaries
of kmail only would cause problems.

If rpm has been problematic for you, switch to something better.
