On my woody system, the v3 packages are preserved as
"xserver-common-v3" and xserver-s3 or xserver-#### etc.

Xfree v4 *appears* to use xfree86-common and xserver-xfree86 only.

So if your system is anything like mine, just remove xfree86-common
and install xfree86-common-v3 and your appropriate server.

Mine tends to wander from time to time too, but XFree 4 doesn't mind...
