Before you downgrade, try executing /etc/init.d/gpm stop as root, then
restarting X (control-alt-backspace kills the Xserver ungracefully, but
makes darn sure its restarted).

9 out of 10 the problem will be gone. gpm provides vt mouse services, so
if you don't use it (say, you use xterms all the time, or, like me,
don't use the mouse on the vt console screens) just dpkg --purge gpm and
it'll be dealt with.
