[plug] gateway problem

Hi list,
        I have a network problem. rubber is my machine and lycra is the
gateway --- the problem is that rubber can not see the world


[root at rubber ]# netstat -r
Kernel IP routing table
Destination     Gateway         Genmask         Flags   MSS Window  irtt Iface

127.0.0.0       *               255.0.0.0       U        40 0          0 lo

[robd at lycra ]$ netstat -r

[robd at lycra robd]$ ping wadial.wa.csiro.au 
works but 
[root at rubber ]# ping wadial.wa.csiro.au
does not 


I have read the Network HOWTO -- as far as I can see this is set up
correctly. Can anyone see a problem or a line of inquiry?
