I ran peanut on a low end machine and found it to be quite good. If it meets
your needs as is then it is fantastic, however it is a bit of a pain to
install additional software on. Probably would be great for just a stock
standard introduction to Linux install and very fast on low end hardware.
As to you points about speed my opinion would only be relative to my small
amount of experience with an early version and can't be taken as an
indication of its current state. Regardless I have found that a small
footprint (culling of useless software that only seems to slows your system
down like MS windows) greatly helps. Most Debian based/derived distros I
have found to be faster than the RedHat etc distros because they always come
out with a smaller footprint.
