[plug] Networked kernel support?

Suppose you have two machines, A and B.
B has an IDE CDR, A does not.
B can happily burn CDs, as it has the SCSI emulation built in or moduled..
Does A need to have similar capability built into it's kernel, or can it
mount and write to B's CDR? Assume A has an old kernel.
I ask because of the way printers are used by machines across a network,
where the using machine must know the printer type.. Or is support for
mountable drives a different kettle of mullet to printers?
(This is sort of hypothetical, but is to extend understanding.. It should
extend to use of tape drives and other funny devices..I think.)
Garry.
