Christian,

Sendmail comes pretty much configured.
But depending what you want to do you will need to add a couple of things.
Are you using a dial-up connection? or do you have a permanent connection? 
are you hosting your mail or do you need to "pop" it off, this sort of info 
you need to know first before you set-up your config.

Remember Sendmail just sends mail not collects ( ie gets mail from a pop3 
server), therefore you will need another bit of software like fetchmail.

comes with some very good HOW-TO pages.
