Like the other guy who replied I use jpilot under Debian which worked
perfectly first time around.  Still, I'm sure you'll be able to get at
least one of jpilot or kpilot up and running.  Maybe if you could
provide more details about how jpilot stops running then I could be of
more help...  The Debian jpilot package I use lists the following
dependancies:

Depends: pilot-link, libc6 (>= 2.1.2), libglib1.2 (>= 1.2.0), libgtk1.2
(>= 1.2.8-1), libpisock3, xlib6g (>= 3.3.6-4)

In particular, do you have libpisock3 (or equivalent MDK package)
installed?
