Try xpdf -upw <password> filename.pdf.  xpdf has to have support
compiled in, the Mandrake and RH 6.2 binaries I tried do.  Also try "man
xpdf"!!!  And for adobe, watch that your xdisplay is not running in
24bits (or a psuedo 32bit mode that maps to 24 bits) - causes random
crashes/lockups.
