Seems to me (haven't actually tried myself) that a
simpler way would simply be to mount (any) CD with an
rpm binary (the program itself), copy the binary from
it to somewhere, umount, mount your RH/Mandrake CD,
and just do the absolute path of the rpm command you
just copied over, eg:

/root/rpm -ivh
/mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/rpm-blah.i386.rpm

Then just delete the temporary rpm binary again.

This way the --root is not needed cause it's
installing in the right place anyway.
