I'm thinking this may be the problem - it may need to be "-> /dev/hdc"
rather than just "-> hdc"

Try changing the fstab entry to /dev/hdc instead, and mounting /dev/hdc

If that works, re-link the file with

ln -sf /dev/hdc /dev/cdrom
