ISA Autoprobing is dodgy by design - all the drivers can do is send
certain commands to certain IO addresses, and see if it gets a known
response. Unfortunately in your case you have some hardware using one of
the standard ne2k IO addresses, which has a problem with the commands it
is being sent, so it hangs.

Very common problem, no solution other than using PCI, or specifying the
addresses manually.  Anybody else miss the old ISA cards where you used
jumpers to set it to what you want?  No confusion that way.  You tell the
computer how you want it, not the other way round.
