[plug] rpm upgrade

i have a rh 6.2 system using rpm version rpm-3.0-6.0
as i have come across packages that require the newer version of
rpm after downloading the newer version when i run rpm -Uvh rpm-4.0-4.i386.rpm i
get the following error message 

rpm -Uvh rpm-4.0-4.i386.rpm
only packages with major numbers <= 3 are supported by this version of RPM
error: rpm-4.0-4.i386.rpm cannot be installed

do i have to build from src the new version or is there a way to upgrade
