On the subject of installing Mandrake packages - have you tried setting up
the Mandrake Software Manager program to use a Cooker source? Until a few
days ago, I was manually downloading the required packages, finding the
dependancies and downloading those etc etc (all the while wishfully thinking
of Debian's apt). However, having read the recent discussion on Slashdot
regarding urpmi versus apt, I had a go at setting up the Software Manager
(which uses urpmi) and it has made my life much more fun.

All you need to do is install a new package source of type Cooker (or
security update etc), update the list of available sources and choose one,
then look at the flat file list in the "installable software" tab underneath
for the package you want to install. It will tell you that it needs to
update numerous other packages and then it goes away and sets it all up for
you. I haven't had any problems with the updates I have done so far, and it
is remarkably painless compared to working through numerous levels of
dependancies. I am now far more likely to install cutting edge packages
from Cooker.

Cheers
