Well, you haven't exactly hit a brick wall there.  Recompiling the
kernel is really not that hard.  If you just want to compile the module
you can "make menuconfig ; make modules ; make modules_install" and
leave your existing kernel in place, but without any guarantee it will
work (the kernel and the modules like to talk to each other).  On the
other hand it is certainly possible to load NTFS support just with a
module, and if you are REALLY stuck someone could email you the module.
