Hi Liam,
I'm still a bit of a newbie myself but from memory it's like this:-
If you want to install linux onto the second partition and this second
partition lay outside the first 1024 cylinders, you need to create a small
/boot partition in the first 1024 cylinders (25MB would be more than
sufficient for this partition) and have LILO (linux loader) on that partition
in order for it to be able to boot. There's quite a bit of information about
this on the www and in the APC Linux Pocketbook for beginners (I'll sell you
mine for $5 if you're interested: RRP $18).
The alternative (assuming that you don't want to annihilate Windoze just yet)
is to get a copy of Boot Magic/Partition Magic or some other partition
software which will make the whole process painless, and you won't have to
make a /boot partition in the first 1024 sectors. It's up to you.
Good luck leaving the sinking ship (read Windoze).
