Hello,

Does anyone know of a way to cut and paste from the terminal window,
as this is my second time trying to send this email and I'm really not
happy about having to retype the whole damned thing again! I couldn't
sleep, so I spent the night downloading and installing the rpms
suggested by RedHat.com in their RHSA. I got many errors, and I'm
hoping that all the packages successfully installed (rpm -q
<packagename suggests they did...). Could you guys please review
these errors and tell me what happened, why it happened, and maybe
even how I could avoid it happening again? I'm interspersing the
terminal window text with my comments about why I did some of the
things I did marked by **.

** tried to install openssh update:

[root at boxie RedHat_updates]# rpm -Fvh openssh-2.3.0p1-4.i386.rpm
error: failed dependencies:
     openssh = 2.1.1p4 is needed by openssh-clients-2.1.1p4-1
     openssh = 2.1.1p4 is needed by openssh-askpass-gnome-2.1.1p4-1
     openssh = 2.1.1p4 is needed by openssh-server-2.1.1p4-1
     openssh = 2.1.1p4 is needed by openssh-askpass-2.1.1p4-1

** I reran the command differently to install all the openssh rpms:

[root at boxie RedHat_updates]# rpm -Fvh openssh*.i386.rpm
openssh ##############################################################
cannot remove /usr/libexec/ssh -directory is not empty

openssh-askpass ######################################################
openssh-askpass-gnome ################################################
openssh-clients ######################################################
openssh-server #######################################################

** tried to install ncurses update:

[root at boxie RedHat_updates]# rpm -Fvh ncurses*.i386.rpm
ncurses ##############################################################
/sbin/ldconfig: Input file /usr/bin/libcurses.so not found

ncurses-devel ########################################################

** tried to install the esound update:

[root at boxie RedHat_updates]# rpm -Fvh esound*.i386.rpm
esound ###############################################################
/sbin/ldconfig: Input file /usr/lib/libesd.so not found

esound-devel #########################################################

** tried to update glibc according to the redhat.com RHSA
instructions. ** there are five files involved in this update:
** glibc-2.2-12.i386.rpm
** glibc-common-2.2-12.i386.rpm
** glibc-devel-2.2-12.i386.rpm
** glibc-profiles2.2-12.i386.rpm
** nscd-2.2-12.i386.rpm
** The RHSA recommends entering two commands to install the update:
** rpm -Uvh glibc-[2c]*
** rpm -Fvh glibc-[dp]*nscd-*

[root at boxie RedHat_updates]# rpm -Uvh glibc-[2c]*
warning: /etc/localtime created as /ect/localtime.rpmnew

glibc ###############################################################
glibc-common ########################################################

[root at boxie RedHat_updates]# rpm -Fvh glibc-[dp]*nscd-*
error: cannot open file glibc-[dp]*nscd-*: No such file or directory

** please notice that there's no mention of glibc-devel or
glibc-profiles,
** and nscd does not appear to have installed either. I tried
entering
** commands differently:

[root at boxie RedHat_updates]# rpm -Fvh nscd*

** this command produced nothing, no #s, just another prompt.

[root at boxie RedHat_updates]# rpm -Uvh nscd*
nscd ################################################################

[root at boxie RedHat_updates]# rpm -Uvh glibc*
package glibc-2.2-12 is already installed
package glibc-common-2.2-12 is already installed

**again, no mention of glibc-devel or glibc-profile

[root at boxie RedHat_updates]# rpm -Uvh glibc-devel*
glibc-devel #########################################################

[root at boxie RedHat_updates]# rpm -Uvh glibc-profile*
glibc-profile #######################################################

** please keep in mind that using rpm -q <packagename all packages
appeared ** to be installed, as well as I could detect (I didn't try
packagenames ** beyond the main name, so I never did enter rpm -q
glibc-devel or rpm -q ** esound-devel, only rpm -q glibc and rpm -q
esound, for example).

TIA,

Ari
