Jon,

Have you told it to check the drive for bad blocks aswell? This really
pushes the time span to near forever (almost)... At least 20 minutes for
my 20G 5400rpm drive. But if it's purely creating an ext2 filesystem it
should be reasonably quick (a minute or much less) and you'll see the
progress as it creates inodes across the disk. What indicators of progress
do you have? What program are you using to format it?
