[plug] mounting problem

ver 2.2.16-22, I see in dmesg the cdroms are registered as:
ide_setup: hdc=ide-scsi
ide_setup: hdb=ide-scsi
hdb:Pioneer DVD-ROM ATAPI..... ATAPI CdROM Drive
hdc:4x4x30 ATAPI CDROM drive
in /etc/fstab
/dev/hdb /mnt/cdrom iso9660 user,noauto,ro 0 0
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom2 iso9660 user,noauto,ro 0 0

Which kernel version are you using? I had this problem with the 2.3 and 2.4
trees, in that if ide-cdrom is loaded or compiled in, then ide-scsi will not
work.
