I don't know the technical details of how two things write to a device, but I
know it works. ^_^
Most cards (esp old/cheap ones) support only two digital audio channels (Left
and Right), while the Live supports quite a bit more (not sure of the number
offhand), so the hardware itself supports multiple channels. It's quite scary
having 10 xmms' all playing different MP3s. ^_^

Something like arts to mix digital could probably do it as a kernel device, for
lesser sound cards. (Does this pseudo-device already exist?)
