As per the PostgreSQL Install FAQ on RedHat's website (sorry if you aren't
using it but the instructions are the same) you need to run initdb to
initialise the database. You can find the whole of the FAQ at:

also http://www.postgresql.org/ will be a good one for you to have
bookmarked.
