Sorry, I thought I was being funny. Oh well, I often make that mistake :).

I think you (or maybe someone else asking for help with Redhat dependency
woes) mentioned on the list being locked in to Redhat for some reason or
other[0], and, well, anytime someone mentions Redhat-specific problems on plug,
especially with respect to package dependency problems, Debian tends to get
a little bit overadvocated.
Justifiably of course :), but sometimes it's easy to forget that people
don't necessarily want a solution that involves installing a new OS/distro.
Anyway, I hope you can work out your RPM woes - but if you do have an
opportunity to try Debian at some stage, I can certainly say that it is
well worth it.
Pete.
[0] I use Redhat (7.1) at work and find it a perfectly workable distro, but
then I tend to change it very very little. It's intended to stay pretty
stable and unmodified, so it doesn't get apps upgraded or anything - the
most trouble I've had with it was getting Oracle to run, which required
installing some older glibc compatibility packages. I certainly wouldn't
want to use it for a machine where frequent upgrading is required.
