Hello,

I've just joined the mailing list (as I just found out about plug). I have
recently moved to Perth and don't really know anyone here who is into
computers in Perth. I thought I'd just write a little about myself. I hope
I will get a chance to meet other like-minded people.

Here's a little about myself:

I've been using Linux for about two years now. When I first started using it
I thought "were've you been all my life?". I finally had a OS which had a
decent command line (shell). I quit using Windows immediately and have never
looked back.

I've got a Toshiba 2800 laptop (700Mhz PIII,128MB ram, 8GB hdd, DVD and built
in ethernet). I use Debian Woody and Gnome. The applications I use most
often are Kmail, Konqueror, Lynx, Mozilla and Gabber. I also use Xine, Xmms
and mpg321. I have a Psion netbook (hand-held with a keyboard) which I
connect to my Laptop via PPP to my laptop so I can browse and telnet into my
computer when my girlfriend wins the fight for the laptop.

I like music and movies but I don't watch TV. I live in Leederville so I go
to the Luna to watch the double features every Monday. I like to drink beer
on the weekends. I am interested in free speech and civil liberties. I
program in C, C++ and Java. I'm currently working on an open source project
called Grapevine (www.grapevineproject.org) which is a distributed
peer-to-peer storage network based on the Freenet project
(www.freenetproject.org). I'm looking for work at the moment but it's been
pretty quiet all over the world.

I am also wanting to get another computer set up to run as an X-terminal and
play music. The massive 7 inch screen on the Psion is not very gratifying -
also it runs an obscure OS called EPOC. Does anyone have a good cheap source
of old and crusty computers? I looked in the Quokka and there were still
people who think a 486 is worth something. Weird.
