During the Billion Seconds' Breakfast the topic of XML editors was
raised - it looks like OpenOffice/StarOffice 6 could come close to
fitting the bill.

(Along similar lines, Abiword is capable of the very same thing, which
would be worth looking into.)

A smidgeon of Perl's XML::XPathScript (XSLT would do fine as well) can
simplify an OpenOffice XML document into something a little cleaner for
publishing. The file format will have changed a little since February,
but it seems straightforward enough.

'Course, OpenOffice is still and enormous, bloated office suite rather
than something tuned towards XHTML, say, but it's there...
