I'm no expert on hardware but just recently I have upgraded two of my
machines and in both cases they exhibited the same symptoms as you
describe and in both cases it turned out to be the ram from the original
boxes giving the problems. With one of them, simply giggling it about
solved the problem but with the other I had to get rid of the old ram.
The ram worked fine until the upgrade, and I have no idea what could
have set it off.
