[plug] Printer ink status?

Hi guys,

Does anyone know a program (preferably console based,
to integrate into a CGI interface) for doing the kinds
of things that the vendor-supplied Windows programs
do? Primarily, checking how much ink is left in the
cartridge?

I've seen a couple of programs for specific printers,
but I can't find any general method. It's a Canon S400
using lpd, if that matters.
