He means what version number of XFree86 are you running? For example,
XFree86 version 4.0.* or 4.1.* are very different from XFree86 version
3.3.6.

For example, if you're running RedHat, you should be able to do:

$ rpm -qa | grep XFree86

...and get a list of packages which show a version number on the end.

I'd add a more pertinent question - does the machine have an Nvidia-based
video card (eg. GeForce, TNT, etc) and is it using the Nvidia-supplied
kernel module and XFree86 driver (ie. so you can do accelerated OpenGL
shit)?
