I don't know if this is any help but i use  find with cpio format=tar 
without compression.
When i run out of space i get device tty not configured.

have you tried
mt -f /dev/st0 status
mt -f /dev/st0 retension
mt -f /dev/st0 erase
This may help reset the tape properly.
