I'd suggest using rmdir in preference to rm -rf where possible. 

Remember, running as a normal user doesn't make it safe - it will just
nuke all your data in your homedir instead of your entire system if you
mess up :-(

using rmdir, you may need to ls -al <dirname> to find out if there are
any hidden 'dotfiles' in it that don't show up normally but will still
prevent dir removal.
