Well I think it might be working:
./cdrecord -scanbus dev=ATAPI
Cdrecord 2.0 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2002 Jörg Schilling
scsidev: 'ATAPI'
devname: 'ATAPI'

Warning: The related libscg interface code is in pre alpha.
Warning: There may be fatal problems.
./cdrecord: ERROR: unknow subsystem (scd0) in (/dev/sr0) <--- probably just cause I've been playing around trying to get scsi emulation working
Using libscg version 'schily-0.7'

I've downloaded cdrtools (new name for cdrecord) from freshmeat untared
it then ran make follow by make install.
I then typed:
./cdrecord -scanbus dev=ATAPI
To get the above.
Anyway its time to get some sleep.
